            Cecil Hotel is the host to many tourists, serial killers, murder victims, and Elisa Lam, but she never checked out (Hilk 1). On January 31, 2013, Elisa Lam was last seen in the Cecil Hotel in security footage of the elevator. The 21-year-old was on her own in California, in what she described as her “West Coast Tour” trip in her blog. After footage of her on the elevator was released, theories began to circulate, why wasn’t the elevator shutting? Who was she talking to? How was she able to get into the water tank on her own? Then came the conspiracy theories: Lam had tuberculosis called Mycobacterium tuberculosis leading to a government cover-up, Lam was murdered, that she was playing the elevator game/dealing with the paranormal, or it was all just an accident (Swann 1). Many possibilities, yet so few answers; we’re going to dig deeper into the death of Elisa Lam.

     Elisa’s internal struggles were massive with her dealing with her bipolar disorder and depression and taking a number of prescriptions for it. Through her blog, we see a side of her which we hardly see in people; she spoke of her struggles with depression and at times it was hard for her:

Depression sucks.

I have no control over my emotions. I will be angry for two minutes and then sad again. I will be happy for half an hour and then emotional again.

So far all I've done is lay on my bed and watch episodes of Chopped.
I'm just waiting for it to pass.

I haven't felt "fine" in over 3 years. This relapse makes me feel as though I haven't made any progress at all.
I'm not sure why I'm being so candid about my depression but I suppose if someone else who has depression reads this, we can feel less alone. I have been only told a few people. Unfortunately in the last 3 weeks most of these persons have disappointed me.
I have severe trust issues I think. Nobody is infallible. I thought I chose friends carefully but turns out not really.
But really my behaviour is pathetic. Reading about Daul Kim. Listening to MCR. It is as though I'm imitating myself from 2007. Next I'll be wearing studs and guitar earrings.
I just wish...someone around me could understand what it really means to be depressed.

You know the internet is where people express themselves. But everyone complains. So when there is a serious complaint, a serious plea for help, for sympathy, it goes unnoticed. Most people just dismiss it as a plea for attention. We aren't heartless, it's just so many have grown immune and de-sensitized. I'm desensitized from reading things like this  being told over and over again.
Just so much pain.
It's pretty bad this relapse though. Tumblr and Colbert aren't helping and I always thought they would remind me this world is capable of greatness.

Elisa had a darkness in her which she attempted to conquer through her writing; this darkness may have been to the fact that at seventeen—the perfect time for every girl just starting their lives, she was instead raped. This may have led to her trust issues, her paranoia that people would turn on her. . Overall, Elisa Lam was a stereotypical Tumblr girl, she had guy troubles and the excitement of meeting guys, the worries of a teenage girl, the betrayal of friends ditching her for their boyfriends, obsessing over TV shows, and the fashion of twenty-year-old ready to set out for the world and travel, while also expressing her internal conflicts on her blog and Tumblr. When she wasn’t traveling, she was a college student at University of British Columbia.

Elisa Lam’s friends described her as caring and considerate and level-head. Her love for books and fashion were expressed on her social media, especially her love for The Great Gatsby and aesthetic pictures. Her fashion also came through on her blog, Tumblr, and Instagram, posting pictures of her favorite fashion lines, of her fashionable shoes, her dog, and her latte art. Elisa traveled in her short-time to New York, lived in Canada, visited museums and art galleries, and went to California as a part of her “West Coast Tour”.  One of her friends spoke saying, “This is the last person I expect out of all my friends to have something like this happen to her,” (“Autopsy Performed on Elisa Lam Provides No Answers.” 1).  She lived her life by the quote, “You’re always haunted by the idea you’re wasting your life” —never wanting her life go to waste even when times were hard and she couldn’t find the will to get up and function (Palahnuick).

            Elisa Lam came to California to have fun and explore, she instead died in mystery circumstances. From this came, four conspiracy theories circulating Elisa’s death. The first conspiracy theory that came was a government cover-up. During the time in which Lam came to California, there was an outbreak of tuberculosis, “This is the largest outbreak in a decade”, nearly 4,650 people were exposed to it (“Tuberculosis Outbreak in Downtown L.A. Sparks Federal Effort.”). . The first conspiracy theory is that Elisa Lam contracted tuberculosis and the government covered up her death. The reason for this was that a test in which tests for tuberculosis is called LAM-ELISA, this led people to believe that her death was cover-up by the government. Seeing as her name backwards was the test for the strand of tuberculosis. However, seeing in which the way Elisa Lam was found, it would have been easier for her death to have resulted from tuberculosis and no evidence points to government involvement. 

When the elevator footage of Lam was released, people began to jump to conclusions. One of the most talked about conspiracy theory was that Elisa Lam was murdered. Many who viewed the elevator footage thought the footage was tampered by a hotel employee who did not want to be seen. In the footage, Lam appeared to have been hiding from someone and later talking to a person who could not be seen by the camera. Dr. Jack Brown, Body Language & Emotional Intelligence Expert Physician, analyzed the video stating she appeared “relax” and was displaying “sexual interest” (Brown 1). Dr. Brown came to the conclusion that she displayed no fear and the person who Lam was speaking to may have connection to her death (Brown 1). On her Tumblr, Elisa posted that she was going out and wrote that showing the indication would have guys hounding after her, she could of meet someone and brought them back to the hotel (Lam 1). However, Dr. David Baron, Chief Psychiatrist at Keck Medical Center, says the opposite, “It looks as though she might of felt threatened, frightened…”, meaning the night could of gone awry ending with her death (“The Death of Elisa Lam”). If it was a hotel employee, they may have had a key leading up to the water tanks without sounding any alarms and able to avoid the cameras, easy to have killed a person. In the autopsy report, there was blood pooling in the orifice which was written off as a result of being in the water for a long span of time and samples were taken for a rape kit, but it was never processed, leaving questions as to if she had been raped and murder (Tovar). This backs up the claim for having been murdered by somebody she met, a hotel employee, or another hotel guest. Yet there is no physical evidence that the coroner could find and since the rape kit was not processed, no DNA was discovered.  However, since there were no markings on Elisa Lam’s body when she was found and no one was seen with her, leaving her alone in her last hours. 

The Cecil Hotel, rebranded as the Stay on Main, is infamous for its housing of serial killer Richard Ramirez, the Black Dahlia before her death, and its suicides and murders.  A hotel with as many deaths as the Cecil is bound to have some paranormal activity, and her odd similarity to the movie, Dark Water, where a girl dies the same way, leading many to the next conspiracy that Elisa Lam was dealing with the paranormal or playing the elevator game. The elevator game originated in on Korean website, it is meant to take you to another world by pressing the buttons in a specific order, Lam was believed to have been playing in the elevator footage as she is seen pressing the buttons and peeping her head out; however, the way she presses the buttons is not order the game goes in. (“4 Theories: What Was Elisa Lam Doing Just before She Died in This Video?”). Others believe that she was affected/ possessed by a spirit; some think that it was Richard Ramirez ghost who was haunting Lam, but at the time he was not yet dead, not until June of 2013. While the way Elisa Lam was acting in the footage was strange, there is no physical evidence, or any evidence at all that gives merit to Elisa having been in an encounter with any paranormal things. 

The last conspiracy theory is the least talked about conspiracy, that Elisa Lam’s death was an accident. Elisa was seen in the footage as sporadic and acting strangely with hand gestures. As many know Elisa had bipolar disorder paired with depression, with bipolar disorder there’s a range of emotions. Elisa could have been experiencing a mania episode that has the symptoms of being “wired”, thoughts racing thru, talking really fast, and doing risky things/ making poor decisions (“Bipolar Disorder”). These are all traits Elisa exhibited in just the elevator alone, it could be that Elisa was not thinking clearly, but instead recklessly and decided to climb the fire escape and go for a swim in the water tank. For the Tumblr post that continued after her death, on her page she wrote that she had lost her phone at a speakeasy, a person may have found her phone and kept it, using her Tumblr (Lam 1). 

Though it’s possible Elisa committed suicide, it is very unlikely as Katie Orphan one of the last people to see Elisa said, “… whether or not what she was getting would be too heavy for her to carry around as she traveled…”, she would not have been worried about the rest of her tour and going back home (Duke 1).It would have been quite easy for Elisa to have climb up the fire escape and lifted the little hatch on the lid of the water tank and got in, when she was found she was nude and her clothes were floating by her body. It could have been she felt her clothes weigh her down and took them off and typically with not knowing her behavior during her episodes that she crashed from the high that she was on and saw no way out and drowned. Another thought is that she was being paranoid and thought someone was following her always explaining her actions in the elevator; she climbed up the fire escape hid in the water tank and just collapsed from exhaustion. 

In a survey of twenty-five people, 50% of people believed that Elisa Lam’s death was an accident. Countless people have commented on Elisa’s death without really looking into her death and when a death like this happens, many try to find a reason for it or someone to blame for it, but accidents happen that can’t be explained. There may never be a true closing for Elisa’s death and no one will ever know what Elisa Lam was thinking when she was in the elevator or in the water tank.

            February 19,2013, Elisa Lam was found dead in the Cecil Hotel water tanks, ending her “West Coast Tour”.  The elevator footage and her mysterious death led to four conspiracy theories:

                                                                    I.            Lam had tuberculosis called Mycobacterium tuberculosis leading to a government cover-up.

                                                                 II.             Lam was murdered.

                                                              III.            She was playing the elevator game/dealing with the paranormal.

                                                              IV.             It was all just an accident

Four years have passed since her death and no one truly knows what happened to Elisa

Lam. A movie based on the circumstances in which she died is in the works and she is being remembered as the Girl in the Water Tank or the Girl in the Elevator, instead of who she actually was, someone who loved books and traveling. “You’re always haunted by the idea you’re wasting your life” (Palahnuick).

The United States government has contacted with aliens from another galaxy and is reverse engineering extraterrestrial flying saucers. At least this is what Robert Scott Lazar (A.K.A. Bob Lazar) claims to have witnessed first-hand. Lazar is a former scientist that worked for the United Stated government at a top secret test facility in Nevada known as “Area 51”. The claims of Mr. Lazar would spark many questions and concerns:

1. How long have these findings been hidden from the public and why?

2. Were these claims merely publicity stunts?

3. What proof does Lazar have?

In the following essay we will examine and discuss Bob Lazar and his out-this-world story

            Bob Lazar, also known as Robert Scott Lazar, was born in Florida in 1959. Lazar is the man responsible for bringing the notorious Area 51 to the public’s attention. He claims to have worked inside of Area 51 as a scientist whose role was to help reverse engineer alien crafts and advanced technology. Even though there’s undeniable truths to some of Lazars claims, there are findings that suggest that he may not of been completely honest.

Lazar claims to have degrees from the prestigious universities of Massachusetts institute of Technology and California Institute of Technology, however investigations into his background show no records of Lazar attending either of these universities (Salisbury, Frank B). Stanton Friedman, a private investigator determined that Bob Lazar graduated high school near the bottom of his class and had only taken one chemistry class. Friedman believes this would almost certainly exclude him from MIT, since they accept only the top percentiles and those who have taken many science classes ("The Bob Lazar Fraud"). Lazar claims the records haven’t been found because the government erased the records in attempt to discredit his story. MIT professors don’t remember Lazar, there’s no records of him and the colleges say there is no way to erase student records ("The Bob Lazar Fraud"). Add this on top of Lazars 1990 felony arrest for aiding and abetting a prostitution ring and it could be reasonable to think that Lazar is a shady character (Los Angeles Times).

 After Lazar released the Area 51 story, it blew up! Lazar wasn’t seeking attention he simply thought the public should have the right to know. “Look, I’m not out there giving UFO lectures or producing tapes. I’m not in the UFO business,” “I’m trying to run a scientific business, and if I’m The UFO Guy it makes it difficult for me. It is to my benefit that people don’t believe the story. So, when somebody says that they don’t believe my story, I say, ‘Great. Pass it around. I don’t want you to believe it because it makes life difficult for me’” (Knapp).

  After years of being at the sole center of the UFO and alien conspiracy community, Lazar slowly stopped answering questions and faded away from the all the alien buzz. Lazar now lives in Massachusetts with his long-time wife. The couple would have somewhat of a rocky start to their new science supply business “United Nuclear”, but he is reportedly doing well. Mr. Lazar still backs his Area 51 story 25 years later, but wants no part of the alien community and the attention that comes with it as he is trying to focus on his business (Knapp).

There are a few conspiracy theories that surround the Bob Lazar story. The first we will

examine is the most popular one: is the government really testing alien crafts? Bob Lazar

provides some of the more solid evidence, claiming to have seen these crafts in person while

working at the site. There have been thousands of reports of UFOs sightings around the Nevada

and New Mexico area. One of the most famous and well documented incidents that suggest the

government is testing alien crafts was the 1947 incident in Roswell. It was released to the press

by public information officer Walter Haut that “A flying disc” had crash landed in a ranch near

Roswell was recovered, but later military officials stated the “flying disc” was nothing more than

a failed weather balloon test (Olmsted 2009). Area 51 is also surrounded by extremely high-tech

security systems, including buried sensors that are rumored to be able to tell the difference

between a human and animals (Poulsen). With the sightings, Bob Lazar claims and this high-tech

security it’s not crazy to think the government could be testing more than just weather balloons. 

The other conspiracy theory is that Lazar lied about his whole story of seeing alien crafts

at Area 51 as a publicity stunt just to make money. When Lazar came forward and made these

claims on camera he surely had to of gotten paid, but he never took it much further than a few

interviews. It’s possible he could have made a fortune off of UFO books, tapes and other alien

memorabilia. Lazar knows this and clearly addresses that he is not interested into this type of

marketing. “Look, I’m not out there giving UFO lectures or producing tapes. I’m not in the UFO

business. I’m trying to run a scientific business, and if I’m The UFO Guy it makes it really

difficult for me. It is to my benefit that people don’t believe the story. So when somebody says

that they don’t believe my story, I say, ‘Great. Pass it around. I don’t want you to believe it

because it makes life difficult for me’” (Knapp).

In Lazars story there is another outstanding conspiracy, he claims to have read briefing

documents that suggested humans have had contact and been influenced by aliens for around

10,000 years (Salisbury). This claim, of all, received the most skepticism. Assuming aliens have

made contact with humans, surly Americans aren’t the only ones that have history with these

beings. There are many different theories and evidence that support this. To find out if this is

plausible we must examine many different cultures in different parts of the world. There are

ancient drawings in caves that depict flying crafts and saucers, some even with fire coming out

of the back of them (Lionsground). Where else would a caveman get the idea of drawing a

picture that depicts a space ship unless he saw it with his own eyes? I don’t know of any birds

that are huge and saucer shaped with fire shooting out of the back of them. Many cultures were

great about documenting things they saw, things they did and their way of life. Proof of other

worldly beings making contact with ancient cultures can be easily found with little research. All

of this evidence was documented long before money driven publicity stunts and long before the

term UFO was used.

After examining Lazar and his story we are still unsure of three things:

1. How long have these findings been hidden from the public and why?

2. Were these claims merely publicity stunts?

3. What proof does Lazar have to offer?

Today, decades later, we are still unsure if Bob Lazar is telling the truth. Some things Lazar said

seem too far-fetched while other claims make sense. The Lazar story still puzzles people today.

We all have our beliefs and ideas about what Area 51 is and what they are hiding behind those walls. Some people believe it is nothing but a military base located in Nevada. Area 51 is located in between an air base and a nuclear plant that has been abandoned for years (La Times 1). Over the years the conspiracy theories have grown to hundreds of beliefs including: Are they storing cashed alien UFO ships there? Is government scientist reverse-engineering the aliens advanced technology? And last but defiantly not least Is the government practicing time travel? There might be some people out there that believe only one of these theories, but I believe in all of these theories. I believe the government is hiding all this info from us because we cannot possibly handle it. Now let’s crash into how the Area 51 are storing UFO ships.

          Bob Lazar has always been very open minded and is very passionate about his beliefs. He is the very first person to speak up about area 51. He claimed that the government had been covering up UFO crashes, aliens and anything else they think we could not handle. He told news reporters that he worked in the laboratories deep in Area 51 near the S4 base (“Bob Lazar 25 Years…”). Bob leaked the alien story about the base in the year 1989, and for twenty-five years stuck with the same story, he never changed it. He claimed that the government was reversing high technology alien weapons and that he had stumbled upon a new element that the world had never seen, and this was called 115 Moscovium (Broden 1).

Moscovium was used to make the UFO hover and it cannot be formed on earth. The night that Bob leaked the story, he said that the government was going to do a test flight for one of the UFO’s that they found, and he was right. Bob and the news reporters went back to where the first UFO flight was seen and from there on Bob was right each time. Ever since that day, people started to believe him and he started to change the minds of the nation. For twenty-five years Bob has been facing negative and positive press.

         Bob has always been extremely passionate about his work and beliefs. No one would keep telling the same story for twenty-five years if they were not passionate about the way they feel.  Ever since he leaked this information, Bob’s life had completely changed neither for the better nor, the good. He has been known as the UFO man for the past twenty-five years (“Bob Lazar 25 Years…”). Bob did not let that get him down, he actually started a business in science. Bob bought a building and started to sell science machines he created and also the things he collected over the years he worked at area 51. People who go in his store say that the stuff he sells does not look normal, that it looks almost alien-like (“Bob Lazar 25 Years…”).

          Bob Lazar is brave and oddly secretive. When you try to look Bob up on the internet it is extremely hard to find anything, records including: Birth records, college information and even employment records, are completely gone nowhere to be found (Broden 1). Since all of Bobs information was gone no one could search if he really did work for area 51. People often wonder why Bob worked at Area 51. All the information we can find about him points to the fact that he did not have the credentials to work there, and people believe that he was probably just a janitor (“Bob Lazar 25 Years...”). Would a janitor know the exact time and date of the UFO test flights?  Bob did not care about how the government was going to react to what he said about Area 51. He believes that the government would not do anything to him because that would mean that everything he has said for the past twenty-five years is true (“Bob Lazar 25 Years...”).

         The government did not care about Bob Lazar and the things he was saying about Area 51, which to all of us seems kind of sketchy. Why did he not get arrested for leaking the secrets about the whole place? Before Bob told the world about the UFO test flights and the S-4 base, no one knew about it. Even the towns nearest the area 51 base did not have a clue what they were living next to. Bob has expired hundreds of movies and television shows about Area 51 including: Aliens, Independence day, Paul, and many more.

            Area 51 is one of the most famous places in the US, but somehow it does not really exist. If it did exist Area, 51 would be found in the wonderful state of Nevada’s located in the hot desert. If you try to drive within a few miles of this secret base, the armed guards will stop you in your tracks. Ever since Bob Lazar let out the secrets of Area 51, people have started to make up stories and conspiracy theories. One of these conspiracy theories is are they storing alien UFO ships there?

            Ever since the UFO cash in Roswell, New Mexico, people have often wondered where did all the UFO debris go? What if there was no UFO crash in the first place? Rancher Mack Brazel and his son found some debris from the UFO wreck on his ranch and decided to drag the material back to his shed and see what it was (“1947 Roswell UFO Incident.” 1). Once the whole town heard what happened, it was all over the news and radio stations. For some reason, the radio stations were told to not call the debris a UFO ship but instead called it a government air balloon crash. That was a cover story, and everyone knew it. Ever since this UFO crashed in Roswell, the whole town has changed; if you have never visited Roswell, New Mexico, you need to. The whole town is covered in alien signs and even their local Wal-Mart has an alien logo on the front of their store.

 Another place that has a lot of UFO sightings is Illinois; this state has their own website where you can input the day and time you last seen a UFO. Ever since E.T flew over the skies in Illinois, people have been seeing more and more each day. The sightings may last between two seconds to two hours people say. The residents believe that it is Area 51 that is causing all of these sightings to happen within their state. There has been over 38,000 reported sightings in Illinois alone (Here’s where the most UFO… 1). Is the government test driving the ships they have collected over the years? Of course, you also get some people who are none believers in Area 51 and even UFO’s:

My wife and I were in Chicago and we witnessed 8 orange/red/bright spheres slowly going overhead. I am ex-Navy and stationed on the USS Midway back in the mid 80's. I worked on the flight deck identifying aircraft so they could set the arresting gear for the correct plane landing (I know my aircraft) - you use the color and shape of the pylons on the aircraft to identify it. This was way slower and way lower than a regular plane would fly. It was much smaller too … The 3rd or 4th one was right overhead in fact my wife grabbed my arm as I joked that if these are real UFO's one might beam me up and she was deathly afraid that it might. (Antinori 1)

            Another conspiracy theory is how the Government is somehow reverse engineering the aliens advanced technology. Many people that have worked at Area 51 have claimed that they have helped in some sort of way reverse-engineer alien technology.

One of those people were Phil Schneider; Phil was a very vocal person about what he experienced while working at Area 51 (Maclsaac 1). Most of the people who know Phil know him as the “UFO Whistleblower”; he has claimed that President Dwight Eisenhower made a deal with three aliens for them to give him their advance technology (Maclsaac 1). Phil told the aliens that Area 51 needed their technology, so the government agreed to allowed the aliens to take a few cattle and a limited number of humans to use as research (Maclsaac 1). Ever since that deal was made, there has been many cases of human abductions.

            Another person who is passionate about finding information on Area 51 and how they are reverse-engineering the alien technology is Gary McKinnon. Gary is an extremely smart person and he had a mission to find out what Area 51 has been hiding from us, and he made that mission happen. Gary actually hacked his way through ninety-seven US military and Navy systems and received hundreds of files on Area 51 (The secret space program… 1). Gary stated that “there are some very credible, relied-upon people, all saying yes, there is UFO technology, there’s anti-gravity, there’s free energy, and it’s extraterrestrial in origin and they’ve captured spacecraft and reverse engineered them.” (The secret space program… 1).

That makes you wonder what all Area 51 is hiding from us, and what if they go a little too deep and let out something we cannot handle. From numerous files, spread sheets with the hear officer name, to picture of UFO ships, Gary found it all. The spread sheets with the officer’s names on it were officers who were nowhere to be found; where did the officers live? Gary was convinced that these officers had to be space marines (The secret space program… 1). After Gary hacked all the files, he knew he was going to face life in prison, but instead of giving up he fled the UK where the US cannot send him to prison. He avoided fifty years in prison and millions of dollars in fines. Why would they worry some much about the secrets Gary let out if it was not true?

            The last conspiracy theory is, is the government studying time travel? We all secretly wish to be the first ones to time travel to be able to go back and time and meet all the people who have died. Sadly, we will never be the first ones to time travel because Andrew D. Basiago already claims to be the very first time traveler at only the age of seven. He claimed he was recruited at the age of seven to work for a top secret project called project Pegasus.

Basiago stated he was put through weird experiments through the years of 1968 to 1972, experiments that took him back in time and space (Schwarz 1). The point of project Pegasus was to study how children were affected by time travel (1). “Radiant energy is a form of energy that Tesla discovered that is latent and pervasive in the universe and has among its properties the capacity to bend time-space” (Basiago). What would it be like to travel back in time and meet one of the presidents or to meet your mother and father before you were born? Some people believe the slightest change in the past can change the future dramatically, and for the government to send children of all people to be in charge of the past and change it however they want is pretty immature. 

            Believe it or not, Area 51 is hiding things from us. Is it crashed UFO ships? Maybe. But, there is no doubt that we are not the only things in the universe. If the other things in the universe are anything like us, then they will find a way to get here and show themselves, if only the government were not in their way. Are we reversing their technology? How else are we getting all the ideas we have today? There have been way too many sightings of UFO’s in the world to think that we have not captured a crashed alien yet.  There are hundreds of UFO sighting websites on the internet; these things are nosy, and they will find a way to live with us. Is Area 51 and the government studying time travel? That could also be a possibility, so try so hard to hid all this from us if it was not true? Why not just come out and say that all this is true? Because some of us could simply not handle all that information, and we would freak out. The only way to ever know this information is if you were to get a job at Area 51.

Area 51 will always be a secret to everyone around it. We will never get to know what they hide inside those thick walls. Unless we get a few more brave people to either hack into their system or for someone to leaked information about the best kept secret in the world. As to the conspiracy theories we all make up in our minds, believe it or not but it is true all of them.

1. Are they storing crashed alien UFO ships there?
2. Are government scientists reverse-engineering the aliens advanced technology?
3. Is the government practicing time travel?   

Even twenty-five years after Bob Lazar let out Area 51’s secrets, the government still has not confirmed any of the claims he said, but just think. Why did the government not arrest Bob for violating his contract?
