Intro
If your child isn’t safe at a
resort, where is she safe? In May 2007, the McCann family went on a vacation
from England to Portugal. Everything was great, good times, many laughs and all
the kids were getting closer. Except all went sour when the oldest at age four,
Madeleine McCann disappeared on May 3, 2007, from the Ocean Club resort in
Praia da Luz in Portugal, where she was staying with her parents Kate and Gerry
(Walsh 1). Madeleines disappearance was never solved; however, many have
come up with conspiracies on how she went missing. Such as:
1) Madeleine
McCann was kidnapped from the Ocean Club Resort and used for sex trafficking.
(Soen 1).
2) Madeleine
McCann wandered off from her hotel room and got lost and drowned in the ocean.
(Soen 1).
3) My
favorite, Madeleine McCann’s parents planned and had her disappearance set up.
(Soen 1).
Let’s investigate Madeleine
McCann’s disappearance and the conspiracy theories surrounding it, with Madeleine
McCann’s parents planning and having her disappearance set up as the most
reasonable solution.
Character Analysis
Who is Madeleine McCann’s
parents? Madeleine McCann’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann were both
British doctors. Kate and Gerry are the parents of the most well- known missing
child’s case Madeleine McCann. (“The disappearance of Madeleine McCann”
1).
Kate
and Gerry, were both born in 1968 and lived in Rothley, Leicestershire. They
are Roman Catholics. Kate Healy is from Huyton, near Liverpool and graduated in
1992 with a degree in medicine from the University of Dundee. Gerald Patrick
McCann was born in Glasgow and graduated from the University of Glasgow with a
BSc in physiology/sports science in 1989. In 1992 he qualified in medicine and
in 2002 got his MD. (Webb 1).
This tells how The McCann parents
are real people, they lived normal lives. Kate and Gerry are well accomplished,
ambitious people. They both are obviously hard workers. They are normal
parent’s, providing well, and don’t seem to “act out.” They were drinking on
holiday, however, that is normal for adults to let loose ad have a good
time.
During
the investigation of their missing daughter, both Kate and Gerry, were
considered as suspects: Gerry was given “arguido” status 12 hours later,
meaning he was officially a suspect and had the rights to remain silent and
have a lawyer present. “The suggestion that Kate is involved in Madeleine’s
disappearance is ludicrous,” Gerry reportedly wrote following the news of his
wife. “Anyone who knows anything about 3 May knows that Kate is completely
innocent." (Stein 1).
This
shows that Kate and Gerry were both considered suspects. This quote tells us
how Gerry and Kate were worried about what others thought of them. They wanted
to make sure people thought that the parents were being accused was
ridiculous or “ludicrous”. That they were considered publicly means the law
truly thought they could’ve done it. Even though they weren’t the first suspect
doesn’t mean they still couldn’t have had a part in the disappearance of their
daughter, they left her unattended for a long period, in an unusual place,
almost a perfect setup for someone to take their daughter.
Kate
and Gerry both seemed as though they were amazing parents and had it all
together. They were taking their children on an amazing vacation full of good
times to Portugal. However, their lack of parenting cost them their daughter.
(“The disappearance of Madeleine McCann “1). The couple would go with friends
to get tapas and leave the kids in the room and go and check on them ever
30 minutes. (“The disappearance of Madeleine McCann” 1). This tells us that the
couple did care about their kids, but they put them wanting to have fun before
the safety of their own children. This is careless. This was a perfect setup
for someone to take their child, who’s to say it wasn’t planned. Out of the
three children in that room, why did they take only Madeleine?
After
the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, Kate and Garry spent over 24 hours
searching every high and low for her. Madeleines former nanny even
stated that “they searched in trash bins for her body, and that’s when they
knew it was very serious.” (Sabur 1). Both Kate and Gerry were loving
parents, and they did want the best for their child. The nannies statement
shows that Kate and Gerry wanted it known that they didn’t know where their
daughter was. They made it seems as they had no idea where she was. Which maybe
they didn’t, however over periods of time Kates story did change.
Kate
McCann was on her way to check on her daughter around 10:05, after she checked
the room and noticed she was gone she went into a frenzy. While backtracking,
she claimed she didn’t see anything out of the usual walking to the apartment,
and that everything seemed fine, however when talking to officials she claimed
she remembered seeing a man holding a young child who she thinks was Madeleine.
(“The disappearance of Madeleine McCann” 1). This tells how careless the
parents were being, if Kate thought she saw her child being held by a man she
didn’t know, why wouldn’t she approach him? This evidence shows that Kate is
not only careless and clueless but also, her story changed which shows a sign
of guilt and lying.
Recently
Netflix came out with a documentary about the disappearance of Madeleine, going
into depth about her disappearance, and exploring the possibilities of what
happened to her. Kate and Gerry chose to not contribute in any way to the
documentary. They chose this because they believe it could” hinder the search
of their daughter. (McLaren 1). This shows that the parents did not want even
more attention and the possibility of their words being used against them in this
huge Netflix documentary to keep their name clear. The McCann parents do not
want any part in negative publicity because they could’ve possibly said the
wrong thing in such a big public eye to make themselves seem
guilty. This tells that they are very cautious with what they say
and do especially concerning the case of their missing daughter.
Kate
and Gerry’s decision to choose to “have fun” eat tapas and drink with their
friends, instead of putting their young children’s safety was not wise, and very
immature. This shows about their personality and who they are as people.
Their irresponsibility was completely overlooked throughout the case and shows
how it could’ve been planned for Madeleine to end up missing.
When
the whole resort was searching for Madeleine, Kate and Gerry allowed people in
and out of the apartment which was an active crime scene. (“The disappearance
of Madeleine McCann” 1). This was perfect for the person who took Madeleine
because it covered their tracks. Now, if Kate and Gerry did partake in the
disappearance of their daughter, this would almost be planned because it would
cover their tracks.
Project 3 Conspiracy
Theories
During
the investigation of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, several
conspiracy’s developed. One being, that Madeleine McCann was kidnapped from the
Ocean Club Resort in Portugal and used for sex trafficking. This is believable
because there had been an unusual amount of trafficking going on in the area.
The police had documented nine assaults and three abductions, all on British
girls, keeping into consideration Madeleine is British. Madeline and her family
were staying in a city called Praia da Luz, not long before she went missing, a
ten-year-old girl went missing in the same city close to where Madeleine went
missing. (Soen 1). This tells how there is a possibility that these kidnapping
could have a connection to how Madeleine went missing.
Another
conspiracy theory that unfolded was Madeleine McCann wandered off from her
hotel room and got lost and drowned in the ocean. This is believable because
both of Madeleine's parents were not in the room or with her at the time she
went missing. In addition, Madeleine had spent all day in the water, sailing
with her friends at the Ocean Club kids center. (The disappearance of Madeleine
McCann 1). With the knowledge that kids are curious and don’t want the good
times to an end, it is a great possibility that while her parents were out with
friends, Madeleine wandered off, left the room and drowned in the ocean.
The
final conspiracy theory that will be discussed, and most believable, is that
Madeleine McCann’s parents planned and had her disappearance set
up. This is because her parents did leave their children left alone,
however she was the only one taken. If it was a random kidnapping, wouldn’t a
kidnapper wouldn’t take all three children? Also, the mom stated originally how
she didn’t see anything out of the ordinary when walking to the hotel room to
check on the kids, however several hours later she stated that she saw a man
holding a child the age of Madeline, that looked like Madeline and was wearing
pajamas like Madeline. Meaning, that Kate McCann may have seen her child get
kidnapped. Madeline’s mother didn’t say this earlier, that is very suspicious.

the active crime scene, the parents allowed many in the room, to look around,
and tore the whole room apart. Meaning, that all the evidence was destroyed, if
this conspiracy theory is true, this could benefit the parents to help cover up
any mistakes they made, or left. This shows us that the way the mother lied
about what she saw the night Madeleine disappeared and how the crime scene was
tampered with shows suspicious activity on the mother and father. (The
disappearance of Madeleine McCann 1).
Kate
and Gerry McCann could have had something to do with their daughter’s
disappearance however it doesn’t change the fact that they still lost their
daughter. However, remember, her disappearance
was never solved, and the case remains open.
Conclusion
In
conclusion, the conspiracies involving the disappearance of Madeleine McCann
are that Madeleine McCann was kidnapped from the Ocean Club Resort in Portugal
and used for sex trafficking, Madeleine McCann wandered off from her hotel room
and got lost and drowned in the ocean, Madeleine McCann’s parents planned and
had her disappearance set up. These conspiracies are proven
throughout the paper through the events that occurred the night of Madeleines
disappearance. Though these conspiracies are very believable, they are not
proven true and Madeline’s disappearance remains unsolved.
