Elisa Lam, a twenty one year old
Canadian college student adventures to the United States to explore the West
Coast cities. She first visited San Diego, and her last destination was Los
Angeles, where she stayed as a guest at the Cecil Hotel (Swancer, et.al) .
Friends and family described Lam as a friendly and outgoing person. When the
disappearance of Lam was announced LAPD posted posters throughout neighborhoods
in the attempt to obtain any information regarding the mysterious incident (1).
However, the case took a unsettling twist when a the last seen footage of Elisa
Lam was released. In the footage Lam is
seen as she enters an elevator, proceeds to push the bottoms, and behaves in an
odd manner as she awkwardly moves in dancing like movements (1) . The last
video of the young student was not only disturbing but also unexplainable. Media soon erupted making the footage viral,
and raising the question of what happened to Lam?
The bad reputation of Cecil Hotel
also comes into place when questioning Lam’s death. The hotel was the home of
serial killers such as Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger, while they committed their crimes(1). Cecil Hotel has
also been a popular spot for people seeking to end their life (1 ). The
horrific experiences that the Cecil Hotel hides within its walls, are said to
have lead to the possession of Lam, and her unexplained behavior or even death.
Elisa
Lam suffered from a mental illness. Bipolar disorder consist of two episodes,
mania and depression (“What Happened to Elisa Lam”). Considering that Lam
suffered from such illness, it is believed that she had a mental breakdown
before her death. The unsettling movements of the young college student fit the
description of a patient going through a
manic phase (1) .During this episode the unusual gestures and movements such as
jumping, are common of a person suffering from bipolar disorder (1).
Expectations have been made that due to her condition she took her own
life. However, how did such a small girl
got herself into the water without any help or how was she able to obtain
access to the top level if the hotel ?. The gaps leave us wondering if suicide
due to her illness is a reliable theory.
Elisa Lam’s unusual
behavior in her large footage became an extreme sensation in the media as
people claimed she was participating in the so called “Elevator Game” (James) .
The game consist of being in a ten story building. First you get in the
elevator on the first floor (1). Press four when you reach the fourth floor,
don't get out and press two (1).When you reach the second floor, press six.
Once in the sex floor, press two (1). When you are located in the second floor,
press ten. In the ten floor , press five. Once in fifth floor, is claimed a
girl will enter the elevator (1). The women is not a human, is advised to not
have any physical or verbal contact with the girl. If such rule is broken the
girl will take the player away (1). Finally press one, then start going to tent
floor, this is the end of the game (1). Once the game is completed you have
reached another world. Is claimed that Elisa Lam spoke to the girl, and just
like warned she was taken away.
The government's intention to have “population
control” is another remarkable theory about the mysterious death of the girl (“The Most Common, The Most Deadly”). It is claimed that Lam was infected with the
diseased of Tuberculosis (1). Tuberculosis (TB) is a dangerous and infectious
illness that consists of a bacterial disease that affects the lungs. After the death of Lam there was a claim to
be an outbreak of Tuberculosis, some conspiracists believe the government
infected Lam and her body was disposed in a water tank in order to spread the
disease (1). The test used to test tuberculosis is called Lam-Elisa.
Coincidence or plot ? Even when the cause of death of Lam has not been
confirmed the CDC found evidence of tuberculosis scare (1). Was Lam a victim of
the government experiments? Was she the unlucky citizen chosen to help population
control?
Elisa Lam was
remembered as an outgoing and happy person. However, her blog open a new side
to the young college student. Her struggle with depression was extremely
noticeable throughout her social media. Due to her bipolar disorder she was
prescribed medication such as Wellbutrin which side effects include racing
energy and thoughts of hurting yourself (“What Happened to Elisa Lam”).
Another medication she was taking was Lamictal the side effects include loss of
coordination which could explain her movements while in the elevator, other
effects are worsening depression and can lead to suicidal thoughts (1). Did her
condition bring Lam to the edge, did she decide to take away her own life?
Elisa Lam’s story
because such an unusual case that the circumstances of her death influenced
many films. In 2014 the movie “The Bringing” was to be created based on the
events surrounding the death of the college student (Morrow).
However the film was never released, but other shows such as “How to Get Away
With Murder” created episodes based on the death of the young girl. During this
episode a young girl's body is found inside a water tank, the unusual death of
the girl makes everyone question what even lead to her death, such scenario is
debatable to be an abstract of the events surrounding the death of Elisa Lam.
Another show who approached such event was “American Horror Story”. The mystery
and unsettling inexplicable details became a sensation to the media as they
tried to solve the death of Elisa Lam. Till this date it remains a mystery and
we may never know who or what killed the girl who seeked an adventure but only
found her last destination.
The young college student who was
once full of life and aspirations became a mystery full of unanswered questions.
We may never find out what happened the day Lam died, but we do know that her
death was not normal and the truth behind it will forever remain a mystery. The
water tank, the hotel, the footage, and her behavior will forever haunt those
who seek to reveal the case. Was Elisa Lam a victim of paranormal activity, a
vicious murder, or her own mind ? The mystery will remain unsolved; all we can
do is create the perfect theory of what happened to this adventurous but
troubled student.
