Kurt Cobain was a lead singer for the popular alternative rock band, Nirvana. He was just
27-years-old when he suffered a life ending gunshot wound to the head. He was outlived by his
wife Courtney Love and their daughter Frances Bean Cobain (Glaros 1). His death is still
unsolved 23 years later. Multiple conspiracy theories have surfaced since his death on March 4,
1994 (Russomanno 1).
1. Did Kurt's beloved wife Courtney Love murder him?
2. Did Kurt himself take his own life?
Let's investigate how Kurt Cobain died with Courtney Love murdering him being the most likely solution.
Kurt and his family lived in Hoquiam for the first few months of his life then later moved back to Aberdeen, where he had a happy childhood until his parents divorced (Russomanno 1). The divorce left Kurt's outlook on the world forever scarred (1). He became withdrawn and antisocial (1). Which then shortly after, Kurt's early life of adolescence began. When Kurt was in high school he was bullied about his size (Kurt &Courtney). He was a lot skinnier and smaller than most others he went to school with. Kurt then became embarrassed and shy, so he started wearing multiple layers of clothing when he went to school to look bigger.
Kurt had a serious love for music and poetry. His singing and songwriting life primarily began after his father remarried. When Cobain's father remarried Cobain resented his stepmother, Jenny and her two children. ("Kurt Cobain" 1). "One of the bright spots of this difficult time was a present from his Uncle Chuck-a guitar" (1). "Although it was fairly beat up, it inspired Cobain to learn to play and it offered him a respite from his unhappiness at home" (1). Kurt later began the band of Nirvana in 1982, for which he was the lead singer of.
Kurt was a shy person and did not always enjoy all the fame on him. Seven years after beginning his life of a singer/songwriter he met Courtney Love. They bonded over pharmaceuticals (Kurt and Courtney 1). Courtney had Vicodin and Kurt had Hycomine cough syrup (1). Courtney became friends with Nirvana's drummer David Grohl (1). Grohl was the "middle man" about relaying Kurt and Courtney's feelings for one another. Kurt wrote songs about gifts Courtney gave him, but he never thanked her. "She seemed like poison," Kurt said (1). One-night Courtney's boyfriend, prior to her and Kurt's relationship, had kicked her out of his apartment (1). She continued her night by finding Kurt and they spent the whole night together (1). Months later Courtney and Kurt began bonding over heroin, then they became an actual couple (1). Kurt and Courtney were also compatible due to the fact that Courtney loved the fame and Kurt hated it (1). She took all the fame off of him. She was a wall for him, that blocked out all the fans and cameras and paparazzi. Kurt said once he found a steady life, that being Courtney, he liked life more (Kurt & Courtney). They later on found Courtney was pregnant with their first and only child. Frances Bean Cobain was born August 18, 1992 (Kurt and Courtney). Due to an article from Vanity Fair stating Kurt and Courtney were un-fit parents, their daughter was taken away from them at birth (1). Months and $240,000 in legal fees later they regained custody of their daughter (1).
Kurt went through rehab for his drug use multiple times (Kurt and Courtney 1). He never fully quit using. Courtney soon became disgusted with Kurt's drug addiction and started going to Narcotics Anonymous and got a juicer to put vegetables in to detoxify herself of all drugs (1). Courtney tried to get Kurt to kick his drug habit, but he had a mind of his own (1). Kurt began using $500 worth of drugs a day, rumor said (1). While Hole, Courtney's band, was on tour Kurt would even try on her dresses and answer the door with dresses on (1). Kurt then wrote his song "Beautiful Son" in 1993 with the lyrics "you look good in my dress..." (1). One day in June of 1993 Kurt's drug dealer came to their home in Seattle and Courtney chased him off (1). Kurt was angry, so he hit her and she threw an orange at him (1). Courtney called the cops and claimed Kurt was physically hurting her, and once they arrived she denied it all (1). The cops confiscated three guns that were in their home (1). Kurt lost many friends and believed Courtney was having an affair (1). These downfalls in his life begun his deep depression. Kurt went through many suicide scares but was not successful with them. Courtney was applauded to have saved his life multiple times by taking him to the ER or calling the cops (1). He even at one point put himself into a coma due to mixing prescribed painkillers and alcohol, and he was in the coma for twenty hours before waking up (1). On March 18, 1994, Kurt began threatening his life with suicide once again (1). Courtney and few of Kurt's friends that hadn't gave up on him started trying out tough love (1). Courtney begged and pleaded, "You've got to be a good daddy" (1). Courtney then left Kurt without saying a word, not even a goodbye. Kurt felt as she was abandoning him (1). Kurt ended up in a clinic after Courtney left him in Beverly Hills, then he disappeared from the clinic only after two days (1). On April 8, 1994, an electrician had found Kurt's lifeless body on the floor of him and Courtney's Seattle home (1). Most people say Kurt had injected himself with a lethal dose of heroin and then shot himself in the head two days earlier on April 6, 1994.
In the case of Kurt Cobain's death there are two well-known conspiracy theories as to what could have happened to him. Those being, his beloved wife Courtney Love murdered him, and the other being Kurt Cobain committed suicide. Although there is no exact evidence to prove either one.
The first conspiracy is that Kurt's wife Courtney Love murdered him by shooting a bullet through his head, and then setting the scene up to make it look like he killed himself. There was a box of drugs lying next to him on the floor containing drug paraphernalia, to seem as if he overdosed and shot himself. Courtney and Kurt had a wonderful relationship in the beginning then it began to fall off into the deep end and be not so stable like it was to begin with. Courtney and Kurt were not getting along well at all. Their marriage was falling apart. Hank Harrison, Courtney Love's father, said "I can't prove she pulled the trigger, but I can prove her involvement to a high degree of certainty" (Nye 1). Courtney and Kurt had been discussing their divorce right before his mysterious death. Courtney might've wanted all of his stuff instead of just half as the papers probably stated. 40% of people believe Courtney killed Kurt.
The second conspiracy is that Kurt Cobain committed suicide. In order for this to be true Kurt would have had to of injected a lethal amount of heroin into his arm which would have immediately hit his system and sent his body into shock meaning if he is the one who shot himself he would have had to of pulled the trigger with his toe. The gun used to shoot Kurt Cobain in the head of the day of his death had no finger prints of any sort on the gun. It would have been physically impossible for anyone to have injected themselves with that much heroin, then shot themselves in the head, and then wipe the prints off the gun after they were already dead. 60% of people believe that Kurt committed suicide.
While both of these conspiracies have an enormous amount of evidence lying behind to support both of them there is still unfortunately not enough to solve the case of Kurt Cobain's death. I do believe the most likely conspiracy would be Courtney murdering Kurt.
- Courtney Love, Cobain's wife, murdered him.
- Kurt Cobain took his own life.
After all the investigating done over the last twenty-three years on Kurt Cobain's death, there is still no answer. It is devastating that the young artist is no longer pursuing his dreams alongside the other members of the band Nirvana. However, his death hasn’t been proven, it is likely that Courtney Love has the most information that will lead to the answer of what happened to Kurt Cobain.
